Xanthine 5' -monophosphate (XMP) is an intermediate of purine metabolism and a product of rate-limiting step in guanosine production, which plays an important role in the synthesis of DNA, RNA and glycoproteins. XMP is produced by inosin-5 '-monophosphate via IMP dehydrogenase (IMPDH). IMPDH inhibitors, including ribavirin and myophenolate, have potential applications as antiviral and anticancer compounds.
