Nitenpyram is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist with an IC50 of 14 nM. Nitenpyram acts on the insect nervous system by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity and acting on cholinergic receptors. Following spontaneous discharge, it widens the membrane potential gap and reduces the membrane potential under synaptic stimulation, leading to the near-complete loss of excitability in the axonal membrane potential channels. It exerts a neuromuscular blocking effect on the axonal synaptic receptors of insects, causing the pests to become paralysed and die. It is primarily used to control sucking pests, such as aphids, rice leafhoppers, tobacco whiteflies, mealybugs, pear psyllids and leafhoppers; in addition, it can also be used to control pests such as thrips.
